Change on the horizon

Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards has signed a bill to increase the civil jurisdiction of the Sulphur City Court to $50,000.00 for regular lawsuits to be effective on August 1, 2021.

This bill does not effect the cap on filing of Small Claims lawsuits.

Civil filing fees have increased as of July 1, 2021. Please contact Sulphur City Court for more information regarding costs to file Civil lawsuits.

CDC has extended the Eviction Moratorium that has been in effect since September 2020. The deadline for the Moratorium is July 31, 2021. CDC has made a statement that this will be the last extension for the Moratorium that has halted evictions for non-payment of rent for nearly a year. Starting August 1, 2021 landlords all over the country will be able to begin eviction proceedings for anyone who is behind on rent.
